Does Lutron work without internet
Smart technology is increasingly a part of everyday life, but with a reliance on WiFi, certain devices can be vulnerable to internet outages. Many people have experienced the sudden freeze of their smart TV when the connection drops out, so it’s only natural to wonder whether all smart devices suffer in the same way.
Those thinking of investing in Lutron smart lighting would be right to ask, does Lutron work without internet? The short answer is yes, although some features may be temporarily unavailable depending on the nature of the outage. Here, we explain what to expect if your internet or network goes down.
Local Control vs Internet Control
Lutron systems have both physical controls and smart controls. Setups typically include physical keypads or switches as well as remote controls or operation via the Lutron App. Keypads, touchpads and handheld remotes are all linked to Lutron’s own communication protocol, so even in the worst cases you will still be able to control your smart lighting without the internet.
What Should Continue to Work?
The function of your Lutron smart lighting depends on whether the network is down or simply does not have internet.
If the network has gone down completely, the processors in the system will still function locally. However, if multiple processors are present, they will not be able to communicate with one another. For example, a keypad relating to Processor A will be able to communicate with a dimmer on Processor A, but not one on Processor B. Similarly, timeclocks will be able to function, but only on a single processor.
If the network is active but does not have internet, the system remains largely unaffected. Processors will be able to communicate locally as they do not require the internet to do so, and devices will function as normal.
Scenes and schedules are typically stored and managed centrally in the Lutron system, meaning these will be unaffected if the internet drops out.
What May Be Temporarily Unavailable?
If you control your Lutron system via the Lutron App, it will not function if the network goes down completely. However, if the network is running without internet, the app can function when locally connected to the network. If it’s remotely connected (i.e. not on the local network’s WiFi), it will not function.
Integrations that require an internet connection will also be temporarily unavailable until the internet is restored. These include Alexa and Google assistants. If your schedules and routines are handled by a separate assistant, they may stop working.
Why This Matters in a Smart Home
Professionally designed systems are built to ensure essential household functions are not unnecessarily dependent on cloud connectivity. While a DIY setup that is managed by Alexa, for example, will suffer when the internet connection is lost, systems such as Lutron lighting control and platforms like Control4 are designed so that they still retain functionality when connection issues arise.
This matters for those who want to benefit fully from the convenience of smart technology without the worry and frustration of internet outages. In homes that are regularly unoccupied, reliability is even more important, as an outage that affects lighting scenes that are programmed as part of a mockupancy could leave the property more vulnerable to intruders.
In short, Lutron reliability delivers greater convenience and peace of mind for homeowners investing in a smart lighting system.
What Happens When the Internet Returns?
If the internet has simply dropped out, but the network has remained connected, your remote Lutron smart lighting features should reconnect on their own. However, if there is a power outage, for example, which results in the network going down completely, some features may need to be adjusted.
Timeclock events that were meant to trigger will not do so automatically when the network returns. Rather, they need to be triggered manually via the ‘Enable and run missed events’ setting. Sequences will reset to their initial step in a Stopped state, while variables will return to their Default state.
If you need help following an outage, your Lutron installer will be able to talk you through the settings and what to do to restore functionality.
Professional System Design and Reliability
While advanced Lutron systems such as HomeWorks must be installed by certified dealers, it’s a good idea to ask a professional to set up any system you choose. An experienced dealer such as New Wave AV will design and install a robust system where reliability is considered from the outset. Physical controls will be incorporated, as well as a local communication protocol so that, should an outage occur, many of your Lutron smart lighting features will continue to function. As such, your technology will deliver convenience as it’s intended to do, rather than creating frustration.
Professional installation also means that you have the reassurance of expert support when you need it. If your system is affected or experiences a fault following an outage, someone is on hand to provide help. Such assistance may not be available if you install the system yourself.
