Turning an Awkward Loft into a High-Performance Private Home Cinema
New Wave AV was commissioned to deliver a fully turnkey private cinema installation for a client in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.
The project transformed a long, awkward loft space into a warm and immersive cinema environment that the client now uses weekly with family and friends.
Rather than creating a traditional darkened screening room, the client wanted a space that felt comfortable, welcoming, and easy to live with, while still delivering genuine cinematic performance. Having previously visited the New Wave AV showroom, the client was keen to recreate the same balance of aesthetics, comfort, and technical capability within their own home.
The Challenge
From the outset, the room presented several architectural constraints.
At approximately 9 metres long with a narrow footprint and angled ceilings at both ends, the loft required careful planning to maximise usable space without compromising acoustic or visual performance.
Every design decision needed to serve two purposes:
- Maintain a clean, spacious feel
- Deliver consistent cinematic performance throughout the room
The project began with a £50,000 budget, which rose to approximately £75,000 as the client gained a clearer understanding of the performance level required to meet their expectations.
System Design & Performance
The cinema was engineered to deliver the best possible experience in the primary seating position while maintaining strong consistency throughout the room.
A full Dolby Atmos speaker layout was implemented, upgrading the original concept from two overhead channels to four. This significantly improved immersion, spatial accuracy, and coverage throughout the space.
To address the room’s long dimensions, an additional rear subwoofer was incorporated into the design. This helped smooth low-frequency performance and maintain a more balanced bass response across multiple seating positions.
Support from Artcoustic played an important role during the design phase. Early-stage technical guidance, layout options, and system planning helped ensure the final solution remained aligned with both the acoustic targets and the client’s aesthetic brief before installation commenced.
Design Approach
The finished cinema avoids the typical “black box” aesthetic often associated with dedicated cinema rooms.
Warm lighting, clean wall finishes, and integrated acoustic treatments create a space that feels refined and inviting within the wider home environment. Acoustic panels were carefully integrated into the room design, allowing performance optimisation without visually dominating the space.
The result is a cinema that delivers the scale, immersion, and impact expected from a dedicated theatre room while remaining comfortable enough for everyday use.
